How I Ran a 6 Figure Business Out of Two Plastic Bags

shopping-cart-24556_1280Running a six figure business out of two plastic bags was how one of my very curious clients once described me. Twenty years ago, my brainchild Swingles, a dance party for the over 40’s, appeared to function from two plastic bags.  Actually they were more like plastic tubs but I can’t rule out the idea that plastic bags were also involved.

As I hired the venues for the dances and they changed weekly, everything that was needed to operate on a given night arrived in these plastic tubs.

It really was the ultimate successful, no fuss business. Once a week on a Saturday night I would rock up with my plastic bags and ensure that hundreds of Brisbane singles were entertained and given the opportunity to mix and dance in an atmosphere that was more conducive to their age than a nightclub.  It seemed like all I did was to stand at the door and take money.

And as counting the number of heads who turned up to my dances was pretty easy and when those numbers were multiplied by the door charge it wasn’t hard to see how much money I was making. As it seemed that the business was contained in two plastic bags, my intrigued client always sat very close to the entrance and watched me like a hawk.

He couldn’t understand it.  He couldn’t understand how this diminutive woman could make so much money with only two plastic tubs which were packed up at the end of the night and all that money went home with me.  It didn’t seem logical to him.

What I didn’t know at the time was that he was secretly planning to copy my model and make a killing himself. In his dreams.

And that brings me to the point of the story.

A business doesn’t necessarily need all the trimmings to be successful. The most important ingredient is mindset and the second most important is vision. To successfully run a business like that which has no stock, staff, venue of its own and not even a website until three years later requires the most intangible of ingredients.  It isn’t simply going through the motions and following a model.

It requires a vision, a dream and an energy that is almost impossible to duplicate by anyone else. Twenty two others tried to copy my model in the four years that my business was running and all failed.  But none failed more miserably and spectacularly or as quickly as my intrigued client who watched my every move and thought he could duplicate my results.

A business isn’t simply bricks and mortar even if it has a physical location. A business has its own energy, fused by the creator and endowed with love and passion and a dream to serve.

If you can bring that type of energy to your business you will be successful as I was.  And what a joy and a blessing that is.

If you require some short, sharp mentoring to develop that sort of energy to birth or rebirth your business, lets schedule a Discovery Session to see if we are  fit.  Within a few short weeks, you could be energising your business with the passion to make it sing.  If you want to know more about how to make your mindset work for you, join me here.
