Self Doubt the Vicious Thief of Entrepreneurial Success

Self doubt; thief of entrepreneurial success

Self doubt; thief of entrepreneurial success

A few months ago I was working with a client who presented with self doubt.  And he told me that he had worked on this before many times with other coaches and with counsellors.  “Why do I still have this?’ he asked and I could hear the frustration in his voice. ‘I’ve done so much work on this,’ he said. ‘And I’m sick of it.’

As someone who works almost exclusively these days with subconscious beliefs and not patterns of behaviour it wasn’t hard for me to come up with a belief that was undoubtedly responsible for self doubt.

You probably have a belief that says, ‘I’m unsure of myself.’  I’m unsure of myself is an subconscious Core Belief in its own right.

‘And you’ve been working on the pattern and not the BELIEF.’

‘Yes, and it seems like forever.  So, what’s the difference?’ he asked.

‘Just about everything,’ I replied.

Consider it like this.  Our behaviour patterns like self doubt, lack of confidence, procrastination or any other regular pattern that we engage in are NOT the problem. Our unconscious beliefs are the problem and these beliefs create patterns of behaviour in us which we sometimes label as ‘sabotage.’

These behaviour patterns are like the branches of a tree. Sure, we can trim them, cut them down or even cut them right back, but they will regrow while the roots remain. Our subconscious beliefs are the roots.

It was an ‘aha’ moment for him.

For entrepreneurs and particularly those starting up in business, self doubt can be a big hurdle and one which either delays or completely stops our success in our new ventures.  It is also a massive block for those attempting to make the Big Leap and uplevel to a higher income bracket or to branch out into a new arena.

Truth is we all experience self doubt at some stage.  It’s natural. We wouldn’t be human if we didn’t have some doubts from time to time.  And some of us might feel it often, but that is not the type of self doubt I’m talking about here.

Self doubt thoughts come and go.  Let them.  Self doubt becomes a problem when it is constant, when it stops you from moving forward, if it causes you to second guess yourself often, when you charge less than you are worth, when you hate selling or marketing and the idea of public speaking sends you into a tailspin.

These are all signs that you are unsure of yourself.  It’s a Core Belief and it is the thief of entrepreneurial success.  If self doubt plagues you, stop working on it. Stop fighting it. Go for the cause instead, that pesky belief that makes you doubt yourself. And pull those roots out once and for all.  I call that emptying the sh#t bucket . And start installing a new, upgraded belief like, ‘I am absolutely sure of myself’ and give it 30 days to really soak in.  That is how you rewire your brain for success. And soon you will start to feel sure of yourself.  And self doubt will be relegated to a passing thought and not another form of self sabotage.

This is such a good analogy: These behaviour patterns are like the branches of a tree. Sure, we can trim them, cut them down or even cut them right back, but they will regrow while the roots remain. Our unconscious beliefs are the roots. This is where we need to work for sure.

Thank you Sandra. Analogies work well when describing concepts.
