Why Did This Olympic Athlete Hire a Swimming Coach Who Could Not Swim?

Do you ever feel a fraud in your business?A number of my clients have told me they feel like a fraud in their business.  Generally, these people are in the start up phase of their business.  They have not yet achieved the success they would like.

If you are a coach of any kind who is just starting out, it is common to feel this way but there’s no need to and I’ll tell you why a little later.

Often, alternative health practitioners have not yet overcome their own health challenges and they too can feel like a fraud.

Those who teach manifesting or deal with money issues may not yet be financially successful themselves.  This is also common and nothing to worry about. It does not mean they can’t help their clients achieve their money goals.

I suffered dreadfully from this worry about being seen as a fraud in my last business.  My business was organising singles functions and I was single.  The obvious question I was asked many times was, ‘If you meet hundreds of singles every week, why are you still single?’

I had made a conscious and very sensible decision not to date anyone I had met through the business and I had also decided that I was not ready for a relationship.

Did that mean my service was not valid because I was single?

Of course not.  It was hugely successful for both myself and my clients.

Last week at a training seminar I met a woman who swam in the qualifying trials for the Olympics and she told me she had a swimming coach who could not swim. I was astounded.  I asked her how he managed it and if it bothered her that her swimming coach could not swim.

She said ‘Of course not,’ as he had a proven track record.  One might only imagine the mental challenge he had to overcome in order to become accepted as a swimming coach.

Do you think he ever felt like a fraud?  Maybe so, but it didn’t stop him.  And then she confirmed something that I’m on about all the time.  She said that it didn’t matter because all top performing athletes know it is all about mindset anyway, and technique, although important, is not the greatest determinant of success.

The truth is Mindset is 80% responsible for our success while only 20% is attributable to action.

While you are building your business and maybe still feeling like a fraud, remember these tips

  1. it is essential to be able to stay positive
  2. build your self esteem
  3. develop a confident mindset
  4. see yourself as a success
  5. start believing in yourself

If you find you can’t talk yourself into not feeling like a fraud or your confidence and self esteem need a little tweaking, why not learn to tap on it.  Tapping allows you to change your attitude easily and effectively usually within minutes.  If you are not familiar with this technique, download the free ebook above called The Five Minute Miracle.

You make a good point here! I think the clearest answer to this conundrum comes in an area I get a load of self improvement ideas, and that’s sport…

All the top athletes have coaches, and yet since they are at the top of their sport, it goes by definition that in most cases they are better at it then their coaches!

    So why do they bother?
Because coaches hold you to account, plus they have an external view of your performance which you can never have!

    Nice post!
    Cheers, Gordon

I’m not a coach but I believe that mindset is the most important part of success. It is hard to remember that so great post to remind us all.

      Hi Shawn,

It’s hard for all of us sometimes to remember that. That’s whay i tap, because i know mindset is so important, and i can still get overwhelmed easily because I have a constant mind.

Madonna, I always feel like a fraud, but that’s because as soon as I sort of master something, I go on to something else and just barely master that before I go to the next thing. And guess what. I have forgotten what I mastered in the first place. Getting older doesn’t help either. I felt powerful when I was in my 50s, but now I just feel old. Thanks for helping me see that there is nothing wrong with feeling starting out jitters often since I am constantly starting out.

Oh Ann, you are incredible. You should be so proud of your strength and your willingness to grow. I do exactly the same as you, master something, then I’m bored and move on to an even more difficult challenge. But I do know what you mean about the age thing. As I watch younger people manage technology, It makes me realise what a disadvantage we are at but then I counterbalance that with the irreplaceable wisdom that comes with age. Give me wisdom over technology any time. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
