Beyond Trauma

It is a common misconception that major traumas scar us for life and that we have to live with the pain for ever. While that might have been true in the past, I’m pleased to say, it is no longer the case.

You’ve probably heard it said many times on television or read about it in magazines that a perpetrator of a violent crime got off with a light sentence while the victim carried the emotional cost for a lifetime. Once again, while this still might be the case for the majority, it doesn’t have to be like this.

You might be familiar with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD for short. This occurs when multiple traumas remain unresolved and it is common among war veterans, survivors of war and of horrific abuse or violent crimes. Even these extreme cases no longer necessarily condemn the victim to a lifetime sentence of nightmares, depression or anxiety.

So, what exactly am I talking about?

There is a fairly new kid on the block in regards to healing traumas of all kinds and of all intensities. You might think I’m being flippant in talking about trauma so lightly or being disrespectful towards victims, or negating their pain. Far from it! I suffered myself from PTSD related to childhood incidents and for many years I was unable to even sleep in my own bed for fear of being attacked in the night.

The technique I am about to share with you healed me of my PTSD and many other wounds and phobias and fears and addictions.

It is called Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT for short) or it is often referred to as Tapping. Simple as it sounds, it involves ‘tapping’ on various acupuncture points on the top half of the body, which strangely enough releases the negative charge on the trauma. Each aspect of the trauma is released this way until no emotional charge is present.

The memory remains intact, but events can be recounted without emotional pain.

How long does it take? That depends on how many aspects of the trauma are present. In other words, how complex the trauma is. One traumatic incident such as a one off attack would take much less time to clear than a lifetime of childhood pain. The length of time required to clear the pain doesn’t depend on the intensity of the trauma or the length of time the person has carried the pain.

Is it really that simple? Yes it is. When humans experience trauma, the normal response is to freeze, which locks the emotion in. It then gets stored in cellular memory where it continues to plague us with fears, anxiety or depression and sometimes nightmares and flashbacks. Those stored memories are often triggered by present events as well. Living with unresolved traumas requires a huge amount of energy and we can often feel drained or overwhelmed.

Consider how animals process trauma. If you’ve ever seen a wildlife program in which a deer has been caught by a wild lion and is suddenly able to break free, the first response when clear of the lion is to shake all over. This frees the stress response in the animal. Unfortunately, modern humans have lost touch with this ability, hence the stress response becomes locked in.

If you are familiar with The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle, he describes the pain-body as an almost separate energetic entity. Unresolved traumas build upon that pain-body and cause massive stress to the system. Tapping frees up the pain-body, leaving us lighter, happier and more emotionally balanced.
